My theory is that there was a contaminated batch of alcohol (I'm imagining some manager buying a barrel of some industrial grade alcohol at a discount because "it's all the same") and since several of the knock-off brands seem to have the same ink supplier more than one company was affected, but... just small random lots. (Out of all of my markers, only two had the problem.)
