It took me three tries to spell "opportunities" correctly in the subject line of an email I had to send before I could drink my tea this morning. That definitely bodes well for the rest of the week, right?

Nov 9 not quite misc.exhausted.me

Decided I am not going back over the hell that was dental this past week. More happening this week. And next year.

No, I wanted to share the "food crime" I made today:

So the other day I saw a post, ostensibly about food crimes:

Butter Chicken Poutine
Folks, that sounded tasty, and I asked [personal profile] ilyena_sylph if I could. She said yes.
The sauce was store bought as typical for me, I added browned hamburger, and I made home fries from scratch.

Tasty meal was had. Very filling. Our son was over, so I had the joy of feeding him in addition to us. And tonight will be Mozzarella Ravioli with Garlic Marinara with mother-in-law. Food is love, people.

Tessa inspected the illustration, then glanced at the pieces. Her keen eyes noted where each piece would intersect with one another, mentally measuring just where the notches needed to be cut.

Moving from sketches to full drawing, and then to modeling three-dimensional figures in clay, to now being able to machine the final sculpture as she envisioned it had been satisfying. More, she would know that her art would bring joy to the local children's hospital. The sun room would be awash in a kaleidescope of colors after the glass was inset in the frame.

That in mind, she began.

Ao3 Meme Thing

As seen on many journals...

Go to your Works page on AO3, look at the tags, and see what the answers to these questions are.

I'm here at AO3

1. What rating do you write most fics under?

Teen And Up (240 out of 332)

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?

Marvel 616 (126)
Marvel (comics) (80)
Leverage (53)
West Coast Avengers (Marvel Comics) (53)
Hawkeye (Marvel comics) (50)
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (32)

Okay this is a little weird because of the way comicsverse stuff is often tagged with multiple fandom tags meaning pretty much the same damn thing. Like I've often put both Marvel 616 and Marvel (comics) on the same fics and there are some of the same characters in a lot of these comics as they're all in pretty much the same universe. Of course other most common ones are also marvel comics related.

So it should really be more like this:

Marvel Comics (a lot)
Leverage (53)
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (32)

3. What is your top character you write about?

Kate Bishop (101) with Clint Barton (93) at a close second.

I really thought it would have been Clint as #1

4. What are the 3 top pairings?

Clint Barton/Kate Bishop (38)
Alec Hardison/Parker/Eliot Spencer (32)
Gwen Poole/Quentin Quire (23) [West Coast Avengers]

Okay this last one is weird because I really didn't think I wrote that much for Gwen Poole/Quentin Quire but I guess I was writing them during one of my super prolific periods or something.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?

Fluff (70)
Drabble (40)
Double Drabble (34)

I write so many drabbles and double drabbles, wow. And a lot of fluff apparently. Not really surprising, I guess.

Orsinian Tales by Ursula K. Le Guin (1976)

This is a collection of short stories set in the fictional Central European country Orsinia. Most of the stories are new for the book, though a couple were published previously, and the invention of the country itself was one of Le Guin's first creative writing projects. It's basically an alt-history Czechia or Hungary, borrowing from real wars and political events; stories set in the Cold War era show Orsinia as a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Aside from the alternate history, the stories have no speculative elements.

I hadn't read this before because it didn't sound like it was up my alley. But it was next up in my chronological read of Le Guin's books, so I gave it a chance, and guess what? It wasn't up my alley!

I freely admit that a big part of the issue is that I'm the wrong audience for what she was trying to do here. A number of the stories are the sort of litfic where the entire plot is family/relationship drama and everyone is miserable, which is a genre that I find deadly dull even if Ursula Le Guin writes it. But I also don't think the prose is up to her usual standard. It's more reminiscent of her early work, and some of it openly is early work! But even the stories dated 1976 read like revisions of something pulled from the previous decade's drawer.

What surprised me the most is how generic I found the worldbuilding to be. It comes off like she wanted to write about Central Europe but didn't have the depth of knowledge to write about any specific country, so instead we have this Ruritanian stand-in that does not have any real weight to it or any distinctive qualities or culture. The stories I enjoyed the most were the ones set prior to the 20th century, which at least took me to an interesting time if not to an especially compelling place.

So yeah, this wasn't for me. Oh well, at least it was short.

"Jack Harkness?"

The man flashed a brilliant smile at the lovely lady asking if that was his name. "In the flesh."

"At least you have clothes on this time," the woman sighed. "Donna Noble. We have a friend, a bit of a madman with a blue box, in common."

"Ahh, I see. And… clothes?" Jack asked, the smile only shading toward a bit more professional.

"Bored one night, asked to see the kind of people that had been idiotic enough to get in the box." She then smiled warmly. "You were the only one in the buff."

"Hope you enjoyed."

Fandom Fifty: #36

2011 - I don't remember much of this year. It's the last year at the Evol Empire, first year at the lab... so a lot of change.

Thor - Do I have issues with the myth breaking? Yes. But as a superhero movie goes, it was a fun romp. (Personal opinion, the Thor franchise is a bit weaker overall than some of the others).
Captain America: The First Avenger - I loved this one. It's the only one of the CA movies I unilaterally love.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - OH HELL YEAH. Even having a bunch of actors that I don't usually care for in it could not kill my love of this! And yes, I did watch the originals, but still love this modern take on it.
War Horse - Still uncertain why I chose to watch this, but wound up enjoying the wandering tale greatly.

Green Lantern - On the list because, much as I love Hal, I despised this movie so much in the first 15 minutes I stopped watching it.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon - The novelization was better, and it spawned epic AUs from me and my co-writer at the time.

Lessons in Living and Death

There had been a time when Janette had been certain she knew just what life, and death, were all about. She could have all of the pretty things she wished, craft games to entertain her, and enjoy Nick's company.

Then he arrived in her city after a long absence, and things began falling apart. From his near-killing of their creator to his wanton embroilment in human policies and lives, Nick was upending every rule of her existence. His partner and his love interest alike added to the chaos.

Meeting Robert changed everything.

Losing him was a bitter lesson of loss.

A unexpected arty gift!

How very unexpected and kind! Fatima_O on AO3 has made a very thoughtful and thought-provoking gift for me out of the blue - so I'm urging y'all to go and leave her some love!

It's a really cool and beautiful mixed media art of Sam and Dean, based on a few lines from a poem:

They are forgiven as they forgive all those dark wounds and deep.

Their beds are made on the Lap of Time and they lie down and sleep.

They are forgiven as they forgive all those old wounds that bleed.

They shut their eyes from their worshippers; they sleep till the world has need.
