time time time see what's become of me

How has it been almost a month since my last post?

I swear I've been doing art. It's just ... not really been good enough to share. Just lots of scribbles and kiddie drawings (following along with a "how to draw" tutorial video that is aimed at little kids is my happy place, very chill) and boxes. So. Many. Boxes. I'm determined to finish the "250 Boxes Challenge" even though it's not going particularly well.

I did watch a sketchbook tour from someone else who was doing the challenge and the guy was so proud of how much his boxes had improved and I'm like, "But your boxes are wrong! Your lines aren't converging properly!" (I didn't say any of this to anyone. This was just the critic in my head.) And I think maybe I might be taking this concept of the lines perfectly converging on the same vanishing point too literally. So I need to learn to chill just a little. Which is maybe the point of doing so many boxes? Because it's inevitable that you hit the "screw it, good enough" stage?

Anyway, the current plan is to count up to 300, because I feel like the first 50 boxes that I did months ago don't count toward building muscle memory and hand-eye coordination. If I can do 8 to 9 boxes a day, I can bang this thing out in February and move on to the next next annoying challenge.

I finished box #106 yesterday.

cheap things are cheap

Do not waste your money on Jot brand glue sticks. This was a Dollar Tree purchase and I hesitated slightly because I do remember that Jot brand highlighters were crappy. But I mistakenly thought glue sticks were pretty interchangeable so it wouldn't make much difference.

The Jot glue sticks are now in the trash and I have purchased a 3-pack of Elmer's from Walgreens.

Dollar Tree is so unpredictable. Every now and then I actually get something good from them ... and then I can never find it again. I got three really nice notebooks (that open completely flat for maximum journaling comfort) and now I regret not buying every single one they had because I haven't seen them in stock since.

Why is it so hard to find notebooks (and sketchbooks for that matter) that open up flat so you can write in them without wrestling with the binding?

master list of all of my sketchbooks

Numbers like dimensions and paper type are from (when possible) the cover or packaging of the sketchbook itself or I retroactively hunted down the info based on product listings online. When I've pulled out the ruler and measured myself, I've rounded to the nearest half inch (or centimeter if that was more convenient). If there's a weirdly-specific measurement like "11.4" that's definitely not one of my measurements.

still around, still drawing

A quick post to reassure everyone that I'm still around and still drawing (and I'm only a few days behind on my "DrawTober" prompts).

Real life has just been a little hectic and I haven't got any photos uploaded yet.

I still dream of being one of those artists who does a whole monthly challenge using a consistent style and/or theme, but, thus far, my first three drawings of October don't even look like they were drawn by the same person because I keep changing my mind about how I should approach this.

For prompt one, I did a drawing with an ink wash over it but then thought that was more painterly and didn't fully fit the "draw" part of the challenge ... so for prompt two I thought I'd do cross-hatching but then remembered that I'm only good at cross-hatching on a small scale (when I can do a small flick motion) and it looks messy at the size I was working so I ended up going over that drawing with marker ... and then day three turned into a hodge-podge of a bunch of different pens and markers ... I like all three just fine, but there's definitely no consistent style/theme going on.
