Katara

Not terribly fond of how this one turned out. The coloring is all wrong and while I could spend more time fighting with the markers to get it right, I don't think it's worth the bother. Katara is such a cool character and this style doesn't do her justice so this is about all the time I plan to spend on it.


(Already on season 3 "Fire" at this point.)

The digital edit might be a slight improvement, but I'm still not that keen on it.

Should I color this one in?

EDIT: colored in with markers (I don't like how this sketchbook handles marker at all)
I'm still not sure which version I prefer. I like the idea of the color, but I didn't execute it well.

I could have sworn that I replied to this, but I recall shouting at how adorable chibi Katara is, and how well the digital edit works color-wise (I recall having marker issues in the past, especially with skin tones). I'd love to see the portrait colored in also if you're up to it.

The weird thing about markers is that the paper seems to matter more than the markers themselves. My last sketchbook worked really well with markers, even when I used cheap markers, and transitioning to this sketchbook has been a a struggle. I think I'll play around with coloring this last drawing digitally.

Yeah I had to upgrade my sketchbook when I got the (knock off) copics as my old notebook was really meant for graphite. It really made a huge difference in brilliance and blending.

Hrmph. I'll keep practicing to see if I get any better, but I'm finding the digital coloring to be frustrating. It's coming out very flat. (And I just realized I forgot to color in her hair things (beads?) blue.)

This is a really solid start, though! I think if you wanted to, you could go in and add some depth by shading her nose/mouth/eyelids and shade/texture (stipple brush?) the fur collar. The coloring and glossiness of her eyes is stunning.

I might try seeing what I can do in Fire Alpaca. (I can't figure out how to do any kind of textures in Photopea.)

I gave up on digital editing and went back to markers.


I'm still not satisfied with it (in addition to not liking the paper, one of my markers ran out of juice before I was done so I had to finish with colors I wasn't as happy with), but I definitely prefer it over my attempts at digital coloring.

Wow this one definitely has the most depth and character of the three! It's easy to see your comfort in the medium for sure, as compared to the digital.
