It was about 2/3 of the way through sketchbook #3 that I really feel like I found my rhythm.

"Donna Noble" marker & colored pencil (2019, sketchbook #3)
1. alcohol markers and colored pencil: "Donna Noble" Doctor Who

August 27th 2019 journal entry
2. Pilot pen: (sketchbook #3 kinda doubled as a journal)

2019-October-03rd pilot pen doodle
3. Pilot pen painted with water: I had just discovered this technique and instantly fell in love with it. (Frustratingly, this doesn't really work on the paper in my current journal.) I also rekindled my childhood love of secret codes ... which in the intervening years I had lost the key to so I had to decode this from scratch and, oy, not only is this written in German (a language I do not speak beyond a handful of Duolingo lessons), I misspelled at least one word.

2019-October-04 David Tennant
4. Pilot pen painted with water: Also in German, also with at least one misspelling and probably not grammatical. (The only thing that helped me decode either of these was knowing that two of the words on this page were "David Tennant".)

2019-October-05 Jared Padalecki
5. Pilot pen painted with water: I helpfully gave myself the code on this one (the arrows in the corners). ("New code today ... Sam.")

2019-October Jensen Ackles
6. Pilot pen painted with water: This is not the worst drawing of Jensen Ackles I have done (I thought better about uploading another one that's actually worse) but, man, it's not good.

2019-October-8th marker
7. (probably started with a Pilot pen) alcohol markers: I regret some of the color choices here, but I didn't own the right shades of markers (I was hoping for a paler green and a bolder purple), but overall, I'm fond of this one.

2019 (October?)
8. Pilot pen painted with water + alcohol markers: Whimsical drawings make the whiny journal entries less obnoxious.

2019 (October?)
9. Pilot pen painted with water + alcohol markers: This was not worth the effort of deciphering. It says "MMXIX October VIII. I am tired and lonely and sad. Where is my joy?"
eye_of_toad: digital edit of original marker drawing (weird eyes)

Based on the bleed-thru to the other side, this has to be alcohol markers, but based on how streaky it is, I must have been using up markers that were nearly empty. I think this was the end of that cheap set of markers that I didn't like. I'm not sure why I even bothered to take a picture of this. (I really need to stop taking pictures of every single page, which I swear I'm not doing... but, yeah, probably 90% and not many of the pages are worth it.)

I also found more chibis:

Chibis are clearly not my specialty and I'm not motivated enough to try a re-draw like I did for the Captain America chibi. These were for a fan gift prompt where the recipient requested Bofur/Kili. This also resulted in a triple-drabble (is that a thing?) and some photo-manip digital art:

This pairing would not have occurred to me on my own, but I think it turned out cute.

And then there was this. This is the point in sketchbook #3 where you can see my "style" shaping up. Less copying and more original ideas.

The second one with a black background is a digital edit, but it looked so much better that I just now went back and started coloring in the background of the original. (I have more black markers that I need and don't mind sacrificing one to filler. I think I was being more precious with my black markers back in 2019. "Back in 2019" ... why does that feel like twenty years ago?)
eye_of_toad: marker drawing of Captain America (Capn America)
As a follow-up to these 2019 Captain America drawings that I wasn't happy with (sketchbook #3), I did a couple of re-draws.

I like how the cross-hatching looked for the red stripes, but then I got it into my head to due stippling for the blue...and then was too lazy to fill it in enough, and I didn't like that first version well enough to bother coloring it. The proportions just weren't cute enough. So then I did the second smaller one. I'm mostly pleased by this one, though there is still a voice in my head going, "Not cute enough! You can make him cuter!" so I may or may not try another version.

Both drawings in #1 were direct copies of a how-to-draw video. And then I got obsessed trying to draw a cute Captain America saluting and I never figured how to have a character with a disproportionately large head salute without it looking off. (#5 and #6 were illustrations for fanfic.)

I'm not happy with any of the Captain Americas (Captains America? How do you pluralize that?) and while the Iron Man and Hulk are cute, they are just copies of someone else's work. So I'm tempted to poke at this concept again just to see if I can come up with something better now.

Alcohol markers were still a new thing for me in this sketchbook so there's still a lot of experimentation. This was the first time it occurred to me to layer colored pencil on top of marker (I think I was inspired by the "Wood carving" tutorial that used that effect to get a marker drawing to look like wood grain).
eye_of_toad: ink drawing of Dream from Sandman (Sandman)
Do not waste your money on Jot brand glue sticks. This was a Dollar Tree purchase and I hesitated slightly because I do remember that Jot brand highlighters were crappy. But I mistakenly thought glue sticks were pretty interchangeable so it wouldn't make much difference.

The Jot glue sticks are now in the trash and I have purchased a 3-pack of Elmer's from Walgreens.

Dollar Tree is so unpredictable. Every now and then I actually get something good from them ... and then I can never find it again. I got three really nice notebooks (that open completely flat for maximum journaling comfort) and now I regret not buying every single one they had because I haven't seen them in stock since.

Why is it so hard to find notebooks (and sketchbooks for that matter) that open up flat so you can write in them without wrestling with the binding?

Art spam!

This is just a fraction of the drawings in sketchbook #3, so more art spam will follow in the coming days.

It's time for more art spam!

There is a wide time-range in this one because I packed this away in a box and forgot about it for a decade.

I forgot to include this one in my sketchbook #2 post.

This was for a character-creation challenge with the prompt "Queen of Magma".

2018 July, The Queen of Magma (original drawing) 2018 July, The Queen of Magma (digital edit)

I really liked how this turned out but when I took a picture of it, it just didn't seem dark enough to convey what I was going for, so I darkened it digitally and enhanced the magma in the eye.

More art spam! (This project is making me obsessive. Also, I'm probably using this as a distraction to avoid all my other chores.)

Look how few colored pencil drawings I ended up doing in the sketchbook that was specifically designed for colored pencil. ::sigh:: I have a chance at a do-over. Sketchbook #13 is identical. I really need to avoid wasting pages on the wrong medium.

Expect more of these in the coming days. Sorry, if you followed my old personal journal, there is literally nothing new here, I'm just consolidating things in one place.

So, in a fit of optimism last night, I signed up for a fan thing where I have to draw fanart for someone's in-progress story. And I lucked out because you sign up based on the summary and they send you snippets from the story after you've claimed the story. So it's a bit of a dice roll.

And the snippets were actually really good, so that's an immediate relief. (Quickly followed by the, "Aw, crap, now the art has to be good, too.")

(I think I've signed up for this same project twice a few years back and both of my authors defaulted and never posted. (Edit: I just looked it up and one of them finally posted a year later so I've poked them to see if they still want the art.))

If I'm reading this right, the deadline is early August. So ... plenty of time and yet, also plenty of time to put it off and forget about it. Hence, making a post for accountability.

Numbers like dimensions and paper type are from (when possible) the cover or packaging of the sketchbook itself or I retroactively hunted down the info based on product listings online. When I've pulled out the ruler and measured myself, I've rounded to the nearest half inch (or centimeter if that was more convenient). If there's a weirdly-specific measurement like "11.4" that's definitely not one of my measurements.

I have a bunch of art posted to my old journal and I thought I should link it here so I have everything accessible in one place. Except here, I've gotten much more organized about labelling sketchbooks and there not so much.

I apparently didn't post any photographs of sketchbook #8 and only posted a Vimeo video that I can't seem to get to play. (I have no idea if I still have the original file anyway to attempt to upload it anywhere else.)

Sketchbook #7 appears to be spiral bound and I dimly recall it being a small-ish size, but I don't remember the brand or details. (That might have been another of my bargain Target finds.)

And that's when I decided to dig out my old sketchbooks to look these things up and maybe take pictures ... and that's when I discovered that I have no idea where any of my old sketchbooks are.

a complete list of my sketchbooks based on very incomplete memories )

Anyway, I'll get around to linking art later. Just making the list was more work than I expected.

And short of massively cleaning my entire room, I just thought of one more place the sketchbooks might be. Off to go look...

EDIT: FOUND THEM! I'll post an updated version of this list soon. By the way is it "master list" or "masterlist". I googled and the Internet seems evenly split, while my spellchecker doesn't like it as one word. Opinions?

This is my roommate's cat expressing her opinion of my sketching.

The Drawesome Prompt this month was "Draw What You See" and I had to cheat and give up and take a photograph of my still life of junk and finish sketching it in my room. (After the walking-on-sketchbook and sitting-on-sketchbook, there was an active attempt to eat my pencil which is when I gave up.) I did do all the initial sketching and outline in person at least.

I was really excited about this prompt and had fantasies of doing a daily drawing this month. Drawing what's in front of you seems perfect for that sort of thing.

However, as usual, I put it off and put it off until suddenly it was the end of the month and I hadn't done a thing so I sketched this out quickly.

I did a pencil test up in the corner comparing a Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt #14B with a simple Blick #6B and I don't see that the "14" is darker as such, but the matt pencil definitely is less shiny than the standard one. (I also started to do this with a blue colored pencil and quickly abandoned that idea due to the lack of contrast.)

This still feels a bit unfinished, but I'm giving up on it. Everything is all out of proportion and wrong and so I'm not motivated to make it pretty.

I really do need to spend a whole month practicing drawing from real life. It's so much harder than drawing from a photograph or imagination.

I've decided that my new goal is to draw eyes regularly. I want to improve my eyes. I don't mind that my style isn't very realistic. I even want to experiment with more stylized eyes. But at the moment, I feel my eyes often look wrong or sloppy (and mismatched).

Sketchbook #10 is officially done! Woot! (I might or might not still post one or two more photographs from it.)
eye_of_toad: hand-drawn doodle (skull & hearts)
I haven't really started sketchbook #15. This is just the inside of the front cover and a swatch page on the last page.

The Crayola markers look pretty crappy on this paper. (I mean it's also the markers because they're just Crayola children's markers, but they aren't quite as bad on other paper.)

I'm actually very happy about this sketchbook. Look how big it is! And it was only $10 at Target. The paper quality doesn't even look bad, I'll just have to remember to limit it to pencil and ink. I'm declaring this the new junk sketchbook and I'm looking forward to using it. (#10 is the current junk sketchbook and it has five pages left to fill up.)

"Junk" sketchbooks are those sketchbooks that don't have to be pretty or polished and I give myself permission to fill up with unoriginal copies of art tutorials, etc. It's always nice to have at least one crap sketchbook in process.

Anyway, current sketchbooks in process:

This is possibly too many sketchbooks to have in-process at one time, but, as I said, I've almost filled up #10 (the spiral-bound one with spirals scribbled on the cover).

    Pictured above
  • sketchbook 10 (Blick, spiral-bound, hardcover), not that great for water-based media or colored pencil, but good for pencil and ink
  • sketchbook 12 (Talens Art Creations), small hardcover (the little blue one in the picture). This is my travel sketchbook and it's one of my favorites.
  • sketchbook 13 (Strathmore, spiral-bound, softcover), designed for colored pencils, it's thicker paper and seems to work okay for watercolors too.
  • sketchbook 14 (Crescent Rendr, softcover), works great with marker, even Sharpie doesn't bleed through the pages, but I hate the floppy soft binding and it's bound so tight, it's hard to hold open to draw.
  • sketchbook 15 (Mondo Llama, hardcover), will probably be best for just pencil and ink (but let's be honest all of my sketchbooks end up being mixed media anyway).
(I did not skip #11. That was a small sketchbook that I filled up ages ago.)

And I have no less than THREE blank sketchbooks just waiting for me to finish filling up more of the above.
eye_of_toad: marker drawing with digital filters (Mona Lisa)
I'm close to completing sketchbook #10. And I just bought a new sketchbook on a whim. I have a couple other in-progress sketchbooks so I was thinking this new one might be up to thirteen or so, but then I double-checked and it will be sketchbook #15. Which made me realize I've never posted anything from sketchbook #14.

This is the title page I made. I started this in September and labeled the pages in anticipation of an October drawing challenges and did three out of thirty-one challenges and set it aside. I really need to swear off these daily challenges. I'm almost guaranteed to fail and frustrate myself in the process. (I did complete one Inktober many years ago, but few of the drawings were very satisfactory.)

I considered turning the apple into an icon, but I don't think it translates well to a photograph. In person, it's mildly fun because of the glitter, but the actual image is still kinda crap.

The only one I like is the "Memory".

I apologize for the shadows. I was too lazy to move my lamp around to get the right angle for the photographs. (These don't really merit the effort.)

I'm mainly posting this just to establish a tag for sketchbook #14 and to say "Hi, I'm not dead." And you can expect more posts in the next few days when sketchbook #10 is finally complete.
eye_of_toad: marker drawing with digital filters (Mona Lisa)
So ... like ... I'm fully aware that neither of these is good, but I'm weirdly pleased with them. I should not love crappy art supplies this much. I was gifted a super expensive boxed set of colored pencils for Christmas and I've only done a handful of things with them, so they're just sitting on the shelf while I play with my Posca pens and scented Mr. Sketch markers. (There are three shades of yellow--pineapple, banana, and buttered popcorn--and it amuses me to no end.) If I hadn't been so lazy, I could have also dug out my crayola markers as they have a few shades slightly closer to flesh tone than yellow, but then I might have felt more obligated to go with realistic colors all the way around and I kind of like how Mona Lisa turned out in hot pink (raspberry, I think).
